The GSM Association, a global trade association representing the world’s GSM operators in commercial and strategic matters, elected its board members to serve during the 2007 2008 term. 12 of the board’s total number of 23 members are occupied by operators with the largest subscriber bases while the remaining 11 seats are filled by members meeting a variety of criteria including size of subscriber base, growth rate, regional influence and record of introducing new technology. Turkcell’s election to this post is an indicator for the company’s importance in its region.
Turkcell, one of the 11 rotating seats, is represented by Muzaffer Akpinar on the GSM Association’s Board. Also a board member in some of Turkcell’s international operations, i.e., investments in Ukraine and Fintur Holdings B.V., Mr. Akpinar will be working with the representatives of international giants such as Vodafone and Orange from the UK, NTTDoCoMo from Japan, TIM from Italy, and China Mobile from China on the GSM Association’s new Board of Directors.
Muzaffer Akpinar affirmed that he is honored on behalf of Turkey that Turkcell to be re-elected to the GSMA Board of Directors. “I’m greatly happy with the status Turkcell has attained in the international platform. The value added that Turkcell has so far created in the world of GSM has an undisputed place in this achievement. With this status, Turkcell is assuming a significant role in charting the path to be taken by the GSM industry in both Turkey and the world,” he said.
