There were criticisms about Avea, founded in 2001 as 2 separate firms including the time after the joining in 2004, that it had made wrong investments. TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile) was especially being blamed for this. Today we asked Turktan about Avea’s investments for 2006 and 2007.
What’s the situation with Avea’s investments? What did you do in 2006? What will you do after this?
Cuneyt Turktan : We made investments for 300million $ last year. We used these for infrastructure, system improvement and to increase capacity. In essence we completed the investments that needed to be done before.
In the new term we will invest 250 million $s more to increase capacity. We also have next generation works. We have an IP protocol switchboard for which the test works has been completed. We formed this switchboard first in Turkey. We will inform this next week. With the aid of this switchboard we will supply productivity and flexibility to our customers. This switchboard will enable is to become the leader of 3G.
We also have a 250 million $’s worth investment plan.
At this point can I ask this? There are criticisms about the Italians having promised to make investments but have not made them. Your words reminded me of that
Cuneyt Turktan : This is not true on its own. It is unfair. Italians were promised roaming. But in the absence of sanctions or laws geared for this, Aria was aggrieved. With the addition of the economic crisis of year 2000, the decisions had dragged on.
Aycell was also going to make rapid investments but they were left incomplete. In year 2004 the 2 parties joined in order to create synergy but TT being on one side and TIM on the other side, both experts in their subjects, therefore hardships have been lived. Thus for this reason the investments were delayed.
You Are In Favor of Number Carrying, Aren’t You?
Cuneyt Turktan : Avea is looking quite favorably to number carrying. Telsim/Vodafone are also in favor of it. On the other hand Turkcell who wants to keep the present situation on does not want it. It has got an unaccustomed Market share of 60% today. It is normal for it not to want this but these are aspects of competition.
But Turkcell Went to Court. Will This Cause Any Delays?
Cuneyt Turktan : Nothing will change. Nothing will get delayed, because firms’ codes need to be identified for 3G.
How is the Situation with Registering Stolen Mobile Telephone Devices Going?
Cuneyt Turktan : Fine. As a matter of fact registration system is going far smoothly. I am saying far smoothly because it is causing us the operators to loose lines. For example think of a person who has come from abroad and will stay for 1 month. Normally he buys a local line and uses it for one month. Whereas in the present situation; his telephone is blocked within 48 hours of purchasing the line. In other words, this is a system preventing line purchase.
