10.Could you give us your predictions for the next 1 – 5 and 10 years for the communication (voice) market – network industry?
We cannot make any market predictions, but we believe that there is a lot of potential in the category of “communications”. If we take video as an example; video calling represented approximately 40% of all Skype-to-Skype minutes for the first six months of 2010. We have announced partnerships with TV manufacturers like Panasonic who have integrated Skype into their TV platforms and we introduced Group Video Calling (in beta) to our Windows and MAC clients earlier this year. We believe that video will change a lot because it allows you to be closer to your friends, family and colleagues while being apart.
11.What are your plans for mobile and 3G? Especially for Turkey
Mobile has been a focus area for Skype particularly since we launched the first version of our Skype for iPhone App in 2009. Now, almost two years later, you can download Skype clients for iPhone, Android and Symbian devices, we have announced partnerships with operators like Verizon Wireless in the US, and KDDI in Japan in addition to our long standing relationship with Hutchison Three in the UK and Australia. And we have OEM partnerships with companies like Nokia: The Nokia N900 is the first device where you can make Skype to Skype video calls.
3G is a prerequisite for many innovative mobile offerings because it provides the bandwidth to do great things like video calls on your mobile device. With 3G being rolled out to more and more areas and LTE as the next mobile broadband standard already on the rise, mobile will remain a focus area for Skype on a global level where we will continue to innovate.
We can’t discuss our plans for Turkey specifically.
12.For the countries like Turkey, which has a very high level tax for communication, we are wondering what the trend is. People’s preferences are higher than other countries?
Skype enables people everywhere to stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues across the world easily via Skype. We have many users in Turkey and Turkey is a growing market where internet penetration is increasing steadily. It’s not possible to share specific numbers since they change rapidly.
13.You were in Turkey once (partnering something with Dogan group) then you cut this relation. What has happened?
We have been working with e-kolay since 06. Our contract has subsequently expired and has not been renewed. We are open to cooperate with other companies to enable more internet users to know more about Skype and stay in touch easily with their friends, family, and colleagues across the world.
14.“Users in China currently can access Skype via TOM Online, our majority JV partner. TOM Online offers local versions of Skype for Windows, MAC as well as mobile platforms such as Symbian and Windows Mobile. (More details can be found at skype.tom.com.) Skype has a good working relationship with TOM Online for more than six years now. TOM Online, like every other service provider in China, has an obligation to be compliant with local laws and regulations if they are able to operate in China at all.”
