Can a particular day really be more dangerous than any other simply because of something as arbitrary as the date and day of the week combination? There is certainly a long history to the belief that Friday the 13th is dangerous only by virtue of its name and number but, as the following figures appear to prove, such assertions can hardly be considered truthful.
According to a British study performed by researchers from the Mid Downs Health Authority in West Sussex in 1993, traffic accidents that occurred on Friday the 13th were 52 per cent more likely to result in injuries requiring hospital treatment than if they occurred on preceding Fridays.
This particular study focused on accidents on London’s notorious M25 motorway, and while its purpose was largely meant to point out how arbitrary results can be when small sample sizes are used, it would have certainly elevated the fear of this notorious date in the superstitious among us.
While other studies have proven these statistics otherwise, 26% of the UK population are in fact fearful of Friday 13th and go to extreme measures to avoid any situation that could risk an accident.
