BOSTON – Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker hosted the first Innovation and Investment in the Digital Economy Dialogue with Vice President of the European Commission, Andrus Ansip, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The high level exchange included a bilateral meeting between the two leaders, and a roundtable discussion with invited senior industry representatives from both sides of the Atlantic.
Vice President Ansip and Secretary Pritzker agreed that the EU and the United States are incredibly important partners that share common values, goals and interests in promoting Innovation and Investment in the Digital Economy.
At this first dialogue of its kind, Secretary Pritzker and Vice President Ansip discussed how to continue building a thriving innovation ecosystem in both the United States and the EU. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to innovation-friendly policies that strengthen conditions for digital entrepreneurship, competitiveness and investment.
The two leaders and their fellow participants also discussed the emerging reality of the Internet of Things, including its great promise and the complex and novel policy issues it may raise.
Vice President Ansip and Secretary Pritzker again reaffirmed the importance of a free and open Internet, crucial to the growth of the global digital economy. The United States and the EU stand as one in the defence of today’s free and open Internet and in support of multi-stakeholder approaches for its governance.
In this context, Secretary Pritzker and Vice President Ansip stressed the significance of the agreement on a new framework for transatlantic data flows, the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield. It was only thanks to the efforts and good will on both sides that an agreement was reached after more than two years of negotiations. The United States and the EU continue to work closely together on the required approval process, so companies and individuals on both sides of the Atlantic can continue to ensure a high level of data protection.
Finally, the parties determined to hold the next Innovation and Investment in the Digital Economy Dialogue in Europe, in association with other relevant EU-U.S. formal dialogues. The issues discussed in this new high level exchange will also be taken up at the regular EU-U.S. Information Society Dialogue, the 14th meeting of which will take place in June in Washington.
