Explained Bob Frater, Technical Analyst at Baillie Gifford, “We had been
looking for this type of product for a while but no-one seemed to be able
to offer it. Finally, Patapsco was recommended by a telephone provider and
we were immediately able to see the benefits of their systems.”
Baillie Gifford uses two telecoms providers, and Patapsco needed to make
some customised changes to the units to ensure that integration was simple
and cost effective.
Patapsco also made further bespoke changes to the Liberator units to ensure
that they provided Baillie Gifford with the capabilities that they
required.
One of the Liberators is being used to split an ISDN PRI circuit across two
terminal devices: the Company’s PBX and its video conferencing facility.
As the PBX carries all the critical voice traffic it therefore requires
resilience.
Patapsco needed to ensure that, in the event of the PRI circuit failing,
the PBX would be re-routed. However, as the PBX was now connected to the
Liberator rather than a direct PRI, the PBX would still see the circuit
available and not automatically try another circuit.
Recognising the potential problem, Patapsco undertook some modifications to
ensure that the PBX always remained in operation. The Liberator has been
configured so that it monitors the state of the incoming PRI line. Should
the incoming PRI line fail then this status will be mirrored on the
outgoing PRI circuits. Therefore, the Baillie Gifford PBX will recognise
that its primary route is down and will switch to an alternate circuit, so
ensuring that the PBX is always operational.
“Patapsco have offered us all the functionality we required, whilst still
saving us money on our ISDN circuits,” continued Bob Frater. “We have
features such as SNMP management, and, of course, the resilience built into
our PBX, so that we have not lost any of our network capabilities by
splitting our circuits.
“We are making substantial savings on our monthly rental costs by using the
Liberator units. They have provided a great return on investment. Based
on our experience we would recommend both the Liberators, and the service
received from Patapsco. It has definitely been a very worthwhile
exercise,” Frater concluded.
