Turk Telekom has awarded NEC Australia 100 per cent of a recent tender for delivery of 500,000 xDSL lines to be deployed throughout Turkey.
Under the contract signed on July 31, NEC will deploy its AM Series Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN/DSLAM) including ATM and IP network interfaces. The full turnkey contract also includes Systems Integration, supply of Broadband Remote Access Servers (BRAS), installation and support services.
In addition, NEC will integrate its Operational Support System (OSS) layer product Director – Common Management System (CMS) – to allow consolidation and optimisation of existing Turk Telekom xDSL and management interfaces. The Director-CMS automates end-to-end subscriber creation and Service Activation and Assurance, providing Turk Telekom operators with a unified and common web based OSS management platform across the entire solution.
The integration of existing and newly supplied equipment will assist Turk Telekom to activate and support approximately 100,000 new xDSL broadband users per month.
In order to service its growing business with the country’s biggest telecommunications provider, NEC Australia established a branch office in Ankara in February this year. The NEC Australia Broadband Technology Centre provides project management, system integration and technical support and service as part of the company’s ongoing investment and commitment to provide broadband technologies in the region.
NEC Australia’s Turkey branch office will implement the full turnkey project for installation and commissioning.
NEC was the first company to commercially deploy DSL technology to Turk Telekom in 2003. The latest contract win will bring NEC’s total DSL supply to over 1.1million lines, making NEC a major DSL provider to the region.

Turk Telekom’s Chairman, Mr. Paul Doany said that “the establishment of the NEC support centre in Ankara demonstrates NEC’s commitment to help us achieve our goals of connecting five million xDSL subscribers by 2008. We are delighted to award this contract to NEC and look forward to working together as partners to enhance the broadband user experience in Turkey.”
A total of 20 million phone lines are currently connected in Turkey, with approximately 2.5 million of the country’s 75 million residents connected to broadband.
According to some estimates, the number of broadband subscribers is predicted to rise to over 24 million by 2015.
