An article by Serco ExperienceLab, the global experience design research agency, evaluates the user experience of leading online music services and offers suggestions for improving their user experience.
The article “Are UXperienced: Evaluating the user experience of digital music services”, written by consultant David Loughlin, examines the user experience of music services including iTunes, Spotify, Last.fm and Nokia Music. David takes a look at the various activities each service must support – from downloading and streaming, to discovering and sharing content – illustrating user experience issues as they arise.
David says: “What we quickly understood is that pricing structure is not always the key driver for selecting a music service. Users often prefer a service that supports their listening behaviour – whether this be due to grouping and sorting functions, or novel approaches to recommendations. In this article we hope to provide some insight into the user experience issues facing developers.”
The article is also supported by a set of design guidelines, for developers working with online music services which can be found on the ExperienceLab blog, alongside many other experience design articles and guidelines.
