Guildford, England. February 10, 2010 – A new study by Coda Research Consultancy has found that Wi-Fi enabled mobile handset penetration in the United States will grow at +25% CAGR between end of 2009 and 2015, to reach 149m in 2015.
Much of this growth is due to smartphone penetration. The variety of high bandwidth applications available, powerful processors, better battery technologies, increased internet functionality, and range of multitasking capabilities will mean significant rises in smartphone behavior. This, together with Wi-Fi integration, superior and more reliable Wi-Fi speeds, growth in Wi-Fi hotspots and carriers embracing Wi-Fi, all help to explain escalation in Wi-Fi enabled handset shipments and usage.
Findings from the study include:
- Wi-Fi enabled mobile handset penetration will grow at +25% CAGR between end of 2009 and 2015, to reach 149m in 2015
- US Wi-Fi enabled handset shipments will grow at +22% CAGR between end of 2009 and 2015
- Wi-Fi enabled mobile handsets shipments in the US will reach 66% of all mobile handset shipments in 2015
- Smartphones will dominate devices used in Wi-Fi hotspots: Two thirds of Wi-Fi hotspot connections will be via smartphones in 2015
- In spite of current slow rollout of 802.11n capability onto smartphones, 95% of Wi-Fi capable smartphones will employ this version of the Wi-Fi standard by 2015
