Businesses and authorities alike need to take the interests of the community seriously and consider a pragmatic approach to security.
The reaction follows a report on the Brixton Blog detailing growing frustration in the borough due to increasing levels of fly-tipping being experienced by the local community, with seemingly little consequence for those committing the crimes.
Between Atlantic Road and Vining Street in the South London area, locals have seen illegal rubbish dumping become a serious problem. Residents are becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of action taken by traders and authorities alike, as local restaurant waste is seen to be piling up after close of business most nights of the week.
Instead of working together to combat the problem, Lambeth Council has instead actioned a Section 74 notice for the businesses in the vicinity, ordering the removal of bins and waste from the roadside or being forced to pay a court-issued fine.
One business owner on Atlantic Road has said “Vining Street is basically a dumping ground, because there’s lots of rubbish already people think it is ok to dump their own and there doesn’t seem to be anything stopping them. With the influx of new businesses this is only going to get worse and it needs to be addressed.”
Authorities have previously said that the task of identifying fly-tippers is an extremely difficult one due to a lack of security infrastructure in place, although there is yet to be any action in the areas that are affected the most. Although there is CCTV in the area, neither the local council nor local businesses have yet come up with a solution to help keep Brixton tidy.

Without sufficient CCTV security systems in place in areas that are blighted by such incidents, realistically there cannot be much hope of resolving the issue of illegal dumping in the area.
