The Union of Salaried Employees TU intends to broaden the scope of its threatened strike in the telecommunication industry.
According to the strike notice, issued 17 October, almost 8,000 salaried employees of the teleoperators, TeliaSonera Finland and Elisa and their subsidiaries will go on strike if collective bargaining fails to bring about an agreement. The strike was due to begin 1 November but, on the initiative of the National Conciliator, the Ministry of Labour has postponed the strike for another two weeks.
On Friday 26 October TU declared its intention to widen the extent of its proposed strike. Within a few days of the first stage of this call to industrial action a further 1,500 or so, salaried employees of DNA Finland, DNA Services, Kymen Puhelin, Mikkelin Puhelin and Fonecta will join the strike.
At DNA over 700 salaried employees will participate in the strike. Industrial action on this scale would clearly be felt all over the country, and in particular affect DNA’s mobile telephone services. And in the Kuopio, Lahti, Lohja, Oulu, Rauma and Pori regions, its cable network operator services would be seriously disrupted. The strike would close down DNA’s retail outlets and bring to a stop the opening of new connections, invoicing and repair work on the operator’s telephone and broadband connections throughout Finland.
At Kymen Puhelin and at Mikkelin Puhelin more than 100 salaried employees would come out on strike. The proposed industrial action would prevent operator services offered by these companies.
At Fonecta some 600 striking salaried employees would create difficulties for 02 02 02 and 118 services and Fonecta Finder.
The first stage of the industrial action would bring both TeliaSonera’s and Elisa’s telephone and broadband customer services for private persons and companies to a complete halt. Opening and closing of telephone and internet connections, customer support, network maintenance and repair plus invoicing would be stopped. It would close down Elisa’s and Sonera’s retail outlets (Elisa Shopit and Sonera Pisteet) all over the country. The strike would also cause problems for local retailers who sell the products and services of these two operators.
Arbitration to avoid the strike and to reach a collective agreement will continue 5 November.
