Meanwhile in a statement made by Turkish Telecom it was said that “internet access is going to continue to provide service with the support of its spare lines”. This brought the question of “where are those spare lines”.

Today, Turkish Telecom announced that 11.5 Gbps portion of a total of 11.9 Gbps overseas internet connection is provided through the fibers that lay under the Marmara sea, and 465 Mbps from the satellites.
In the written announcement made by Turkish Telecom, it was stated that “the cable malfunction was fixed” and that with the previous capacities “service with spares” is going to continue.
Because of the reasons arising from the malfunction, overseas internet connection speed fell to 3Gbps from 8.8Gbps and there have been difficulties in reaching the internet sites abroad.
By utilizing alternative connection choices, Turkish Telecom managed to increase the overseas connection speed up to 6.9Gbps. With the cable fixed, today the connection speed is about 11.9 Gbps.
The written announcement from Turkish Telecom:
“On January 16th 2005, MEDTURK; the undersea cable between Istanbul and Italy, have been repaired and started to provide service again. With the resources that have been added before, Turkish Telecom capacity is going to continue to provide service with its spares.”
