EMLYON Business School is organising the first global conference for research conducted via Twitter. The three day conference addresses developers, businesses and researchers, and aims to open an official dialogue on the research that is being carried out via the social media platform, across all industries, for research and development purposes.
Two Twitter employees from their US offices in Colorado and UK offices will be speaking at the conference, Dr Jeff Kolb who is a data scientist, and Romain Huet – a Twitter developer advocate who campaigns solutions for developers to interface Twitter with their apps.
Dr. Clement Levallois, an expert in new methods of data exploration and innovation in digital business models, and the organiser of the conference, says: “Twitter is ‘data on tap’ with enormous potential to change the way information is gathered across almost any industry or sector you can name. There has yet to be an event where people from across disciplines get together to share ideas and practices on how it can best be used for research purposes.”
Amongst a variety of workshops such as ‘Text mining on Twitter data with DiscoverText’, the conference will present seven keynote speakers and 22 poster presentations. A poster presentation is a piece of research summarised in a visual representation.
Some of the topics to be discussed by the speakers include: ‘Twitter data for urban policy making’, ‘Sentiment Based Spam Tweets Detection’ and ‘The brand or a spokesperson, who should tweet? When brand conversation leads to brand humanisation’.
The end product of the conference will be a book produced from the material disseminated at the conference, as well as the most prominent ideas discussed during the three days. The organisers aim to market this as the ‘go-to’ reference for researchers around the world on the latest thinking on how to use Twitter for research.
